Well, I went in for that RDC deal.. (Deal ends 12/31/2002) you know, buy an RDC and get a CRE-55494 (ART 5492)TX & RX free.. (Got the RDC for $185)

It's going to take you longer to read this then it took me to install and test the RDC.
First off, the instructions SUCK BIG TIME. Installation is simple in the RDC. Remove the box on the bottom that houses the DCC port. Remove the dummy plug on the larger port...Break off the connector on the DCC with the wires attached
(the DCC board has a crease so you can do this nice and clean ..The wires are for installation on a non-DCC ready loco) or it won't fit in the pre-cut floor slot if you don't. (The instructions DON'T tell you this) plug in the red button supplied (can be replaced with a reed switch and activated with the magnet that is in the bottom of the transmitter) on the DCC board and plug it to the board and tape the antenna, full extended, to the outer floor. This takes 10 minutes..TOPS.
TESTING:
I tested on my indoor-elevated RR in the rec-room..
After setting up the channel and momentum on the transmitter I placed the RDC on the track and powered up...Interior lights come on...Press the red button..ALL lights will blink fast...press "A" key until they slow down...release the "A" key... You're linked. There are other steps you can do to adjust the momentum but I skipped them for now..
RESPONSE:
It was pretty decent.. Considering I have heating duct work and iron support poles near the reception area. One thing is very cool.. When the RDC stops the lighting stays on. Reversing. Red marker lights go out and headlight comes on with the RDC stationary.
I'll test it better when the weather clears up... and will do a better install after that...You know...I still have the windows and other stuff to do to make it look right..
"FREE" is a good deal and I'm pleased with the performance I got.
